Logos Bible Study & the Rabbi

I received an email today, apparently from a Logos Bible Study student.  Here it is in its entirety:

Mr. Creasy- You incorporate a rabbi into much of your discussion, classwork.  It brings me sadness, for here is an individual that is brought to sin numerous times by repeated denial of Christ (and publicly) by being associated with Logos.  His testimonies to the Jewish faith in a classroom forum are repeated denials of Christ.  There is no humor in that!  In his extended duration with LOGOS he has had opportunity for many gifts of the Holy Spirit.  It would be prudent to let him go and have time for prayer and reflection.

And here is my reply:

I'm sorry you feel the way you do.

The purpose of Logos Bible Study is to create "educated readers" of Scripture who are fully equipped to read, study and apply the Bible in their own lives.

Although Logos Bible Study reflects a distinctly Christian perspective, it is important to understand--and to respect--other point of view, as well.

Viewing Scripture from a Jewish perspective can only enrich our understanding of the text--which, after all, was written by the Jews!

Interestingly, when I tried to send my reply, I found that the email address was phony.  Apparently, the person who sent the email made up the address, so his/her comment would be anonymous.

I've taught the Bible for a long time now (over 30 years), and I've "team-taught" with a number of Rabbis over those years, including at UCLA.  I've also served as "scholar in residence" at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, the first Christian scholar to do so.  Working with the Jewish community has always been richly rewarding, and teaching with the Rabbis has offered great insight into the Bible, on a variety of levels.

It's important to understand that Logos Bible Study is an educational endeavor.  And education involves understanding a variety of perspectives on any number of issues.  To do otherwise is not education; it is indoctrination.

I'm always amazed (though I probably shouldn't be) at people who limit their world view so severely, be it in religion, politics or day-to-day life.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Bible Study and the Rabbi
As the rabbi in question has taught - a very valuable lesson for me - much of Holy Scripture is written referring to community rather than personal belief and action. On a personal level, this means that a rabbi is wedded to his community, and though his personal religious beliefs may change, his commitment to his community is still very important. I, for example, left my denomination because I believed its leaders were leading their congregations into heresy, but I still pray with members of that denomination, participate in small groups and healing ministries with members of that denomination, and consider those who stay - for whatever reason - as my brothers and sisters in Christ. I believe that The Lord has unique relationships with each of us, and uses us, in His on way and timing, to advance His kingdom. Who are any of us to judge the walk of others seeking to obey what they believe The Lord is calling them to do - way, WAY above my pay grade!
