The Easter Triduum begins today: Holy Thursday evening Mass through Easter evening prayers. Holy Thursday is called "Maundy Thursday" in the Anglican and some other Protestant churches. The word "Maundy" is from the Latin mandatum, the first word in the phrase, "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" ("A new commandment I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another"--John 13: 34). This is the antiphon sung during the "Mandatum" ceremony of the washing of feet, traditionally conducted at Thursday evening Mass or services.
