    Few topics reflect the deep division between Roman Catholics and Protestants more than the role of Mary in the Church.  This is unfortunate on many counts.  First, the role of Mary is a secondary theological issue:  whether Roman Catholic or Protestant, our salvation depends solely upon the completed work of Christ on the cross; it does not depend upon any action or function performed by Mary—or anyone else—past, present or future.  The Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, strongly emphasizes this subordinate role of Mary when it states that the Church’s understanding of her “neither takes away anything from nor adds anything to the dignity...
