When I teach the Gospel according to Mark, the question inevitably arises: “When we reach Mark 11:12-14, why does Jesus curse the fig tree?” After all, we are told that that it “was not the season for figs,” so why would Jesus be so offended at not finding any?

This episode presents a difficult problem in Mark, and we can only solve it if we read the narrative in its full context and examine its language, grammar and syntax very closely...
