In Genesis 12:2-3, God chooses Abram, an anonymous and obscure man from Ur of the Caldeans (modern-day southern Iraq), and he makes him a promise:
I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;
I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;
And all people on earth will be blessed through you.
God chooses Abram to play a crucial role in the salvation of the human family, for it is through him that all people on earth will be blessed; it is through Abram that God creates a nation who will be a “light to the Gentiles” (Isaiah 42:6) and through whom he brings the Messiah, who takes away the sin of the world.
